Crime Alerts are provided to give the University community timely notification of crimes that may present a threat to the campus community and to heighten safety awareness. In general, criminal suspects described in Crime Alerts are unknown to the victims. However, in the instance of a violent crime occurring between two individuals who know each other, University Police will look at each instance to determine if the suspect poses a continued threat to the campus community and issue a warning where necessary. Crime Alerts often ask for information that may lead to arrest and conviction of the offender when violent crimes against persons or major crimes against property have been reported to the police.
The Department of Public Safety will issue a Crime Alert when there is a reported crime that poses a potential threat to the safety of the University community. Crime Alerts will be issued for incidents occurring both on and off campus. Frequently, information for Crime Alerts comes from incidents occurring off campus that were reported to a neighboring police agency. Links to on-campus and off-campus Crime Alerts are provided below.
This information is provided as part of The University of Maryland's commitment to safety at the College Park campus and is in compliance with the federal Student Right-to-Know and Campus Security Act of 1990 (Public Law 101-542 as amended to the Clery Act of 1998) and the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 1965 (Public Law 110-315 as amended in 2008). Every attempt will be made to distribute Crime Alerts in a timely fashion subject to the availability of accurate facts concerning the incident. Alerts are issued to all umd.edu email accounts.
